Awesome Agave – nature’s super sweetener

Awesome Agave – nature’s super sweetener

One of Mexico’s most amazing native plants and used for all sorts of purposes from medicine to making paper, cooking and brewing tea or tequila!

Agave has been planted in many other tropical countries around the world. Being a great drought-resistant plant from the same family as the yucca, you’ll also find it in many Australian gardens. One of the most familiar species is Agave Tequilana or Blue Agave, which we use in our Beautiful Beetroot Cheek & Lip Tints.

Blue agave is thought to help reduce wrinkles and give strength, resiliency, and elasticity to hair. It's a very good natural astringent.

Agave juice is traditionally fermented into a rather potent and very popular Tequila. But on the medicinal side Agave Leaf tea can be used to treat constipation and excess gas! It is also used as a diuretic and even to treat arthritis.

Agave syrup is about 1 ½ times as sweet as honey and is often used by vegans as a honey substitute. It’s great in smoothies with banana and cinnamon, as a topping for cereal and porridge or drizzled over pancakes or bread. It can be used instead of honey or syrup in baking, but it’s a bit runnier, so watch out!

Agave syrup is made up of fructose and glucose, so it has a much lower glycemic index than conventional granulated sugar (sucrose), but it can be insulin resistant so diabetics should be wary of using too much.

You can now buy it in health food shops and the natural foods aisle in most supermarkets. It comes in different shades and like olive oil, it gest stronger in flavor as it gets darker in shade…

Easy Oatie Agave Cookies!

Dry ingredients:

◦ 100g instant oats
◦ 90g whole wheatflour
◦ 40g raisins or sultanas (you can also use chopped dates or cranberries)
◦ 1 tsp baking powder
◦ 1tsp ground cinnamon

    Wet ingredients:

    ◦ 2 tbsp coconut oil
    ◦ 1 large egg, room temperature
    ◦ 1 tsp vanilla extract
    ◦ 120ml agave syrup

Mix the dry products together except the sultanas or raisins. Then whisk the wet ingredients together. Combine dry and wet and then fold in the raisins. Allow to rest for about half hour while your cooker is heating up to about 200C (180C for fan ovens).

Divide up into balls and bake on an oven tray for 12-15 mins or until golden brown. These will be amazingly squashy juicy chewy cookies!

      Ingredientes secos

      ◦ 100 g. de hojuelas de avena instantánea
      ◦ 90 g. de harina de trigo integral
      ◦ 40g. de pasas (las puedes sustituir por arándanos)
      ◦ 1 cucharada de polvo para hornear
      ◦ 1 cucharada de canela molida

        Ingredientes líquidos

        ◦ 2 cucharadas de aceite de coco
        ◦ 1 huevo grande a temperatura ambiente
