Household cleaning without chemicals

Household cleaning without chemicals

Yes, people did actually have clean and germ-free homes before the invention of bleach! You can cause so much more damage to yourself and your family by using highly toxic, chemical cleaning products around your home under the guise of creating a germ-free environment.

So, time to go back to old school, non-toxic cleaning. Here are 3 of the best.

Anti-bacterial – Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil is a truly versatile product for all home cleaning and anti-bac use… You can get bottles of it from the supermarket and although it’s not cheap, it lasts ages.

It can be mixed with water in a spritzer bottle to clean most surfaces, is great on floors, as an air-freshener, toilet cleaner, degreaser, anti-bacterial cleaner and pest deterrent… I also put a few drops in the laundry (it can kill dust mites) and to soak smelly cloths.

◦ Floor Cleaner – 20 drops of eucalyptus oil to a bucket of hot water (you can add white vinegar for extra shine).
◦ Wipe neat oil (using cotton wool ball) around areas prone to cockroaches and ants (like inside cupboards and behind bins) and leave the cotton wool ball inside.
◦ Use it neat on sticker residue to totally remove it from glass
◦ Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a cup of hot water and wipe over areas prone to mould.

    De-greaser - Orange oil

There are many eco friendly cleaning products based on orange oil, an essential oil produced by cells within the rind of the orange. This oil is used for many things including pest control and can kill a whole colony of ants let alone just the one! Many farmers use it on crops to kill aphids. It combats grease like a dream and smells lovely around the home. Perfect for kitchens and bathrooms.

    RECIPE for orange oil cleaner:

    1. Place approx. 500g of orange peel (including pith) inside a 4-5 litre bucket.
    2. Pour enough distilled white vinegar over the orange peel until the peel is just submerged.
    3. Cover and put the container in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight and over 2 weeks stir every couple of days with a wooden spoon.
    4. After 2 weeks, strain the liquid and pour into a container for storage. To use, dilute 30ml to a litre of water in a spritzer bottle. Shake well before use.

Perfect Shine – Vinegar & Rosemary

Your nana probably used vinegar for her windows with some newspaper. It really is the best for cleaning glass, bathroom and kitchen tiles, floors, varnished wood and grubby paintwork. It’s also often used with laundry. You can also boil your kettles with vinegar to remove lime scale and drop furred up shower and tap heads into vinegar and neat lemon juice for scale removal.

However, vinegar can sometimes smell a bit like a fish ‘n’ chip shop, so one way of neutralising the vinegary odour is to boil your vinegar with a couple of sprigs of new growth spring rosemary. Clip a couple of sprigs straight from the bush and pop them in a covered pan with the vinegar. Bring to boil, then let cool and steep overnight. Decant into a spritzer bottle and use with cotton cloth. You can use neat or diluted with water.

Brillo Perfecto – Vinagre y Romero
