“At this point, I’m sure you’re familiar with the word ‘detox’. This concept, which has gained immense popularity in recent years, invites us to clean some part of our lives. It can refer to food, house cleaning products, or any of our body systems. And although each detox is different, in general, they all refer to the same idea: stop consuming certain ingredients or substances in order to give our body a rest and live a healthier life. That’s what I want to talk about today.
I have had all the skin types that are possible for a single person: very oily with acne, combination skin with oily T-Zone, normal, dry and super, mega, ultra dry. I blame it to my constant hormonal changes, and it has taken me 20 years to find a beauty routine that works for my skin and keeps it more or less stable. For example, in the last year, I have gone through acne, dry skin and now normal skin. My face is as unpredictable as the weather… That’s life!
Among the things that have helped me clean my face and keep it healthy are my diet, lowering my stress levels and using less makeup. But also one of the most important parts, if not the most, has been the detox of my beauty routine. I know that many of you may want to do this too but are not sure how to achieve it. Today I have some tips that have worked for me.
1. Set your priorities. As the skin is the largest organ of the human body it’s also the most affected when there is any kind of imbalance. In my opinion, the first things you should replace are your cleaning and moisturizing products as well as your foundation, concealer and powder. After that, I recommend changing your lipsticks because they often contain toxic ingredients that most of the times we end up ingesting
2. Do it little by little. It is not a good idea for your wallet, the ecology and even your self-esteem to do the detox all at once. A good way to start the process is to classify your makeup products into three categories:
◦ Things you want to keep because you love them or because you're not ready to get rid of them, like the shadow kit of the X collection that makes your heart beat a thousand times per hour.
◦ Things you eventually would like to replace but not yet, either because you like them or because you want to finish them, like mascaras, blushes and eyebrow products.
◦ What you want to throw away immediately because you don’t use it anymore, it doesn’t work for you, it contains toxic ingredients or it’s bad for your skin like products that have already expired, have bad smell and those that you really do not love and you are only accumulating
3. Buy new products. When embarking on a detox, it’s important to replace your products with others that are truly better; not only for your skin but also preferably for the environment. These days, more brands are committed to offer beauty products that nourish your skin while doing no harm. Look for them in expos, social networks and blogs.
