Inspirational Woman: Sigourney Cantelo

Inspirational Woman: Sigourney Cantelo

Beauty editor, expert blogger and vlogger, Sigourney Cantelo was a magazine beauty editor for many years, most recently as Beauty & Health Director at Vogue Australia. Now with her own beauty blog, Beauticate, she's also a contributor at The Grace Tales as well as mum to 2 year old Max. Here she shares her health and beauty secrets.

As well as your amazing blog/vlog Beauticate, you also contribute to other publications like Popsugar and The Grace Tales. How do you juggle all this with a small child?

Creativity, chaos and the occasional tantrum (mine, not Max’s)!! No really… I find I have to just fit in work wherever I can. If that means waking up at 5 to sneak an hour or two in before Max wakes up then that’s what I have to do – or late night working on the laptop in bed! I do a lot of business calls in the car on my way to daycare drop offs and pick-ups.

What’s your daily beauty routine and how do you manage to keep looking beauty industry fab, while being a busy mum?!

My beauty routine has had to become extremely streamlined lately. I am a big fan of lash extensions as it means that most days I can skip eye makeup completely but still feel done. I try and get the odd IPL or laser skin treatment to encourage collagen and zap pigment which means I can go foundation free most days. It’s all about putting a little groundwork in so you can take shortcuts later.

Are you a healthy eater? What are your diet weaknesses?

I go through phases. I really love vegetables so when I’m being good I do a lot of veg stirfries and curries in winter, quinoa features heavily in my diet as an alternative to rice and a yummy, filling addition to salads. I have a major weakness for noodles – I love Malaysian Char Kway Teow and treat myself to it once a week – loading it with chilli sauce. I also love pizza and Mexican food – anything with spice. I try to balance the naughty meals with a few light salads or veg meals either sides.

Do you have any natural/DIY beauty recipes?

I love using coconut oil as a moisturiser and recently discovered how amazing Olive Oil is when I was in Greece. I used it on my legs, rubbed it into my cuticles and used a little on the ends of my hair. I drink a lot of herbal teas (obsessed with Pukka tea – mint and green!) and I put the used tea bags in a little bag in the freezer – in summer I’ll pop them on my eyes as a cooling, detoxing eye mask.

What’s your best natural beauty tip?

When I use beetroot in my smoothies or cooking I always take a piece that has just been cut and rub it on my lips and a little into my cheeks for a natural flush of colour. I also love putting Epsom Salts into my bath with a few drops of lavender oil – the magnesium in the salts draws out toxins and the lavender helps me wind down for bed.

And how do you stay fit and healthy?

I see a trainer Ricardo Riskalla of Rawfit once a week – he gives me toning exercises and homework to do at home and I go for a weekly jog or walk around the harbour. I also do my own yoga practice and I dance in the kitchen with Max when we’re cooking dinner together and on Saturday mornings – it’s so much fun being silly together and we get our heart rate up at the same time.

Favourite thing about living in Sydney?

The harbour and the bush walks that surround it. I live in North Sydney and do a beautiful walk around Lavender Bay that has the most rockstar views of the opera house and bridge. I also love the walks around Mosman and the Bondi to Bronte.

How do you most like to spend family time/time with Max?

Playing with him, inventing games, cuddling as much as possible and really listening to him. Children have the most amazing view on the world. It amazes and inspires me every day hearing him come up with different thoughts and concepts.

What are your strengths and weaknesses as a mum?

I think discipline is so important and I think I’m pretty strong on that front, as hard as it is. It’s so important to teach him boundaries in a loving and firm way. That said, it’s hard to be patient all the time, and those toddler tantrums can be hard to cope with. As mums, we just do our best really and that’s all you can do.

What are your favourite Ere Perez products and handbag must haves?

I’m absolutely in love with the Clever Carrot Lip & Cheek Balm in Happy – it’s such a beautiful shade – it gives me a similar effect to my beetroot trick, but is lovely and hydrating, too. I also love the Versatile Vanilla Highlighter in Sun Halo and Pure Rice Powder in Bronze Tones.
