Long before I ever considered what was in my personal care products, I had taken an interest in my health. I went to the gym regularly, chose organic produce, practiced “clean eating” and if you asked me, I would have considered myself more health conscious than your average joe. In general, I felt like I was making good choices, but my skin wasn’t changing.
Your skin is your body’s largest organ. This means what you put on your body is just as important, if not more so than what you’re eating.
It wasn’t until someone explained it to me like this – you make a conscious effort to put good things IN your body, why wouldn’t you also care what you put ON your body? I had never made this comparison before.
I’ve had acne for well over ten years at this point and it’s showing no signs of leaving me any time soon. One of the things that has helped improve my skin the most over the years is paying closer attention to what’s in my makeup products.
When you think about products for healing acne, I’m sure makeup isn’t necessarily the first thing that comes to mind. It’s not uncommon for people to focus solely on their skincare routine and neglect the impact that makeup has.
We all wash our faces daily, but how long does the cleanser stay on your skin for? The answer for most is probably not more than 60 seconds. A quick massage on to the skin and then we wash it off.
But what about our make up? For many of us, myself included, makeup stays on your face for 8+ hours a day. Recently my makeup has been on for close to 15 hours a day! That’s significantly longer than a cleanser, which is why I believe the ingredients in your makeup are just as important as skincare. Do you really want potentially comedogenic (pore clogging) ingredients sitting on your skin all day? I think not.
For many years I had hundreds of those tiny stubborn skin coloured bumps covering my forehead. I spent what feels like forever racking my brain trying different skincare combinations to get rid of them. Little did I know that the makeup I was using daily was what was making my skin worse. Once I started to take a closer look into everything that touched my skin, I finally started to see the results that I had waited so long for.
For this reason, Ere Perez Quinoa Water Foundation is one of my all-time favourites - especially if my skin is feeling irritated. The formulation is ideal for those with acne prone skin because it’s extremely lightweight and won’t clog your pores. Finding a liquid foundation that is safe for those that are prone to Malassezia folliculitis (fungal acne) is quite challenging! Not only is the Quinoa Water Foundation safe for acne and rosacea but it also doesn’t contain any fungal acne triggers.
If you’re someone with normal to dry skin, it’s unlikely that you’ll need a setting powder. However, if you’re an oil slick like me, the Quinoa Water Foundation pairs well with the Corn Translucent Powder. This is a close second favourite for me. Finding a powder that doesn’t cake up or look chalky is not easy. Plus, less than 10 ingredients in the formulation means less ingredients to potentially irritate the skin!
And the best tip for us acne prone folks - wear red lipstick! Your skin is beautiful regardless of what it looks like however, there's nothing like a red lip to give you a boost of confidence if you're having a bad skin day.
