Inspirational woman: Sarah Wilson

The lovely Sarah Wilson is one of Australia’s best-known media commentators in the health, health living and beauty fields; as well as being a journalist, author and magazine editor. In her twenties, Sarah was a restaurant reviewer and editor of Cosmopolitan magazine. She was also the host of the hugely successful first series of MasterChef Australia and face of Lifestyle You.

 

Following her diagnosis with autoimmune disease, Hashimoto’s, Sarah began to look at different ways to manage her illness. These ways included following a toxin free, sugar free diet as well as reviewing her attitude to health and exercise. Sarah’s books, IQuitSugar and I Quit Sugar For Life have been a huge success and spawned a successful business,  including a series of cookbooks, which she manages with her Sarah Wilson blog and media work, while cycling and hiking in her spare time.

 

You have a pretty crazy schedule with IQuitSugar.com and your media work; how do you keep up your energy levels, especially when you’re travelling?

Meditating once or twice a day and doing exercise every morning, even if it’s only for twenty minutes.

 

What do you like to do to relax/in your free time (if you actually have any!)? 

I hike most weekends. I also like to swim in the ocean. Anything that gets me out into nature!

 

How has your attitude to health and fitness changed since you were diagnosed with Hashimoto’s?

I’ve become a lot gentler in the way I do exercise and a lot more pragmatic about other health factors. I no longer do them to achieve a goal, but to manage my illness.

 

As far as healthy eating is concerned, to help your own chronic illness, you avoid sugar and carbs to a certain extent; do you ever fall off the wagon?

I lapse regularly, but it doesn’t overly concern me. My go-to meal to get back on the wagon, so to speak, is a pork chop with a stack of green veggies. Then a good sleep and a fresh start the next day. Don’t beat yourself up about it.

 

You’re a food lover and former restaurant/food critic; do you ever get frustrated with the lack of healthy choices in restaurants and food outlets?

I don’t have a problem finding places where the food is fantastic (I know how to navigate a menu, and food labels!), however I do despair at the general state of eating in the Western world because there is so much misleading of the general public regarding what is good for them, as well as general ignorance. Another factor is food wastage – it all needs to be a lot simpler!

 

Do you have any natural/DIY beauty tips?

I use my Ere Perez mascara to cover grey hairs!

 

Why do you love Ere Perez makeup?

It’s clean and simple and has consistently worked for me for a number of years. Clean and simple is the way to go on so many things in such confused times.

Después de ser diagnosticada con Tiroiditis Crónica (Enfermedad de Hashimoto) Sarah comenzó a buscar formas de lidiar con su enfermedad, entre ellas está el llevar una dieta libre de toxinas y azúcar así como un cambio de actitud hacia la salud y el ejercicio. Los libros de Sarah “I Quit Sugar” y “I Quit Sugar For Life” han sido todo un éxito y dieron lugar a otra serie de negocios exitosos incluyendo una serie de libros de cocina, lo cual combina con su blog y trabajo en los medios. En su tiempo libre practica el ciclismo y el ir de excursión.

 

Tienes una agenda muy ocupada con tu blog “I Quit Sugar.com y tu trabajo en los medios, ¿cómo le haces para mantener tus niveles de energía, en especial cuando viajas?

Medito una o dos veces al día y hago ejercicio todas las mañanas por lo menos 20 minutos diarios.

 

¿Qué te gusta hacer para relajarte en tu tiempo libre?

Voy de excursión casi todos los fines de semana, también me gusta nadar en el océano, lo que sea que me haga estar en contacto con la naturaleza.

 

¿Cómo cambió tu actitud hacia la salud y el ejercicio al ser diagnosticada con Tiroiditis Crónica (Enfermedad de Hashimoto)?

Los ejercicios que hago ahora son más suaves y soy más pragmática sobre otros factores de la salud, ya no hago ejercicio para conseguir un objetivo sino para manejar mi enfermedad.

 

Comer saludable es muy importante para manejar tu enfermedad crónica por lo que evitas el azúcar y los carbohidratos, ¿te sales de tu dieta saludable con frecuencia?

Sí lo hago pero no me preocupa demasiado. La comida que me hace regresar al buen camino, por así decirlo, es un plato de chuleta de puerco con una buena guarnición de vegetales, después un buen sueño y un nuevo comienzo al día siguiente. No debes culparte por ello.

 

Eres un amante de la comida y ex-crítica culinaria, ¿Alguna vez te has sentido frustrada por la falta de opciones saludables en los restaurantes y establecimientos de comida?

No tengo problemas para encontrar lugares en donde la comida sea fantástica, (sé muy bien cómo navegar en un menú y en las etiquetas de las alimentos). No me gusta la manera de comer en el mundo occidental, el público en general tiene un concepto erróneo de lo que es bueno para ellos, también existe mucha ignorancia al respecto. Otro factor es el desperdicio de comida, creo que todo debería ser mucho más simple.

 

¿Tienes algún consejo de belleza natural?

¡Uso la Mascara con Aceite de Almendras Ere Perez para cubrir mis canas!
