The humble, yet beautiful daisy – April’s flower

The humble, yet beautiful daisy – April’s flower

Did you know that the Daisy is officially the flower of April? Well now you do! And this most humble and unassuming family of flowers is actually one of the earth’s most precious and well used for health and beauty purposes, as well as many other uses.

The Daisy family, also known as the Asteraceae, composite or sunflower family is the second largest flowering plant family after the Orchidaceae.

This family has a remarkable ecological and economical importance thriving in pretty much every corner of the planet, from the polar regions to the tropics and providing local economies with products such as cooking oils, lettuce, sunflower seeds, artichokes, sweetening agents, coffee substitutes, and herbal teas (like chamomile).

The family also includes the gorgeous garden flowers, marigold, pot marigold (also known as calendula), various daisies, chrysanthemums, dahlias and many more.

Asteraceae are important in herbal medicine, including Grindelia, known as “gumweed”; Echinacea, thought to be an immune system booster and yarrow, which has a long history as a powerful 'healing herb' used topically for wounds, cuts and abrasions.

Some of the Asteraceae however, like the dandelion, are now considered weeds, although dandelions are used as salad and to make herbal tea (they’re also great for feeding pets like rabbits, guinea pigs and tortoises!).

Our favourite members of this amazing plant family are, of course, the Calendula, Sunflower and Chamomile. We’ve already talked about the benefits of the sunflower, so now it’s the turn of Chamomile and Calendula. CHAMOMILE Chamomile-Benefits-A-Late-Night-Tea

Chamomile has a number of medicinal uses. Applied topically or drunk as a tea/infusion it’s used for treating hay fever, inflammation, muscle spasm, menstrual disorders, ulcers, gastrointestinal disorder and even haemorrhoids!

Chamomile is thought to contain anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties and could be used to treat stress and insomnia. Many people drink chamomile tea at night for this reason.

We use it in our Creative Chamomile Eye Shadow Duos, because its calming and anti-inflammatory properties are great for ensuring the most sensitive skin around the eyes is not irritated.

CALENDULA The flowers of calendula

Calendula (or marigold/ "pot" marigold) has been used traditionally as a culinary and medicinal herb since ancient times. The petals are edible and can be used fresh in salads or dried and can even be used to colour cheese or as a replacement for saffron.

In some of the earliest medical writings, calendula was recommended for treating ailments of the digestive tract and for detoxifying the liver and gall bladder. The flowers were applied to cuts and wounds to stop bleeding, prevent infection and speed healing. In the American Civil War, calendula flowers were used on the battlefields in open wounds due to their anti-haemorrhagic and antiseptic properties.

Our Correcting Calendula Powder Foundation is a beautiful, effective, light, all-purpose and natural powder foundation that blends in well has great coverage but lets the skin breathe.

Ultra light in feel, texture and coverage, it’s perfect for everyone, but particularly those with oily, acne-prone or problem skin. Weightless, totally natural and chemical free, it’s made from GMO-free corn and contains no fragrance, cellulose gum, urea, lanolin, alcohol, SLS, panthenol, stearyl alcohol, propylene glycol, stearic acid, mineral oil or parabens, so it’s perfect for even the most sensitive skin.

Regardless of how you use them, April is all about celebrating daisies and other plants from their family, so when you see one by the road, path or in your garden, give it a little nod!
