Versatile Vanilla – yet another Mexican miracle plant!

Versatile Vanilla – yet another Mexican miracle plant!

The Totonac people, who inhabit the East Coast of Mexico in the present-day state of Veracruz, were the first to actually cultivate vanilla. According to Totonac mythology, this beautiful native Mexican tropical orchid was born when Princess Xanat, forbidden by her father from marrying a mortal, fled to the forest with her lover. The lovers were captured and beheaded and where their blood touched the ground, the vine of the tropical orchid grew.

In the 15th century named the fruit tlilxochitl, or "black flower", after the matured fruit that shrivels and turns black shortly after it’s picked.

Vanilla got its modern name from Spanish explorers who arrived at the Gulf Coast of Mexico in the early 16th century. They called it vainilla, or "little pod" and until the mid-19th century, when French entrepreneurs shipped it to the islands of Réunion and Mauritius in hopes of producing vanilla, Mexico was the chief producer of vanilla. Now Vanilla is cultivated in most tropical corners of the world.

Versatile Vanilla

It has the most enticing, beautiful, intoxicating aroma. It’s used in all sorts of things, such as pastry making, candles, cosmetics, skincare, haircare, room fresheners, perfumes and much more.

Pop a couple of drops of real vanilla extract on your neck or wrists for a beautiful scent that lasts for ages. Vanilla-Highlighter

For our Versatile Vanilla Highlighter, we use natural vanilla extract, not only for it’s gorgeous smell, but also for its antioxidants - vanillic acid and vanillin (the aspect of Vanilla that gives its distinctive aroma).

Antioxidants protect your body from damage from free radicals and toxins. Vanilla extract contains between 26 and 90 per cent of the antioxidants of unprocessed vanilla, depending on the type of antioxidant and the concentration of the extract. It’s thought to also have anti-inflammatory qualities.

Did you know that Vanilla is actually an appetite suppressant? Like peppermint oil, smelling vanilla can also satiate hunger. So if you burn a pure vanilla oil/extract candle or essence, it will stop you feeling hungry. Unless of course it makes you think of vanilla custard or custard creams…in that case it may have the opposite effect!!!

In any case, we absolutely LOVE vanilla and we’ll take any excuse to breathe it in at any time of the night or day!

Know your vanilla extract

Many vanilla extracts aren’t actually vanilla – particularly those used for baking and room scents.   True, natural vanilla flavouring is derived from real vanilla beans with little to no alcohol. The maximum amount of alcohol that is usually present in natural vanilla extract is only 2–3%. Imitation vanilla extract contains vanillin, made either from guaiacol or from lignin, a by-product of the wood pulp industry. Always check the label. Clearly imitation vanilla extract is cheaper.

Vainilla, La planta milagro Mexicana
