How to know when your makeup is expired

is my makeup expired?

Using expired makeup may not seem problematic, but it can sometimes cause more harm than good. With poor application at best, but potential health risks at worst, it’s important to check the shelf life of your favourite beauty essentials. But how long does makeup last?

Once a product is opened, the clock starts ticking. Look for the little jar symbol on all of your beauty packaging, which indicates the product's lifespan or PAO, ‘period after opening’. The number, usually 6, 12, 18 or 24 – indicates how many months after opening that the product will be able to fight off bacteria.

How do I know my makeup is expired?

Expired makeup looks different depending on the type of product. Look for a change in consistency, colour and even smell of your beloved makeup products.

Declutter your makeup bag and throw away anything that:

  • Smells strange

  • Applies differently than usual

  • Has changed texture or colour

  • Is older than its recommended shelf life

Out with the old

Take the time to declutter, read labels, and invest in beauty that makes you feel good, inside and out. A seasonal inspection and purge of beauty products can help keep on top of your collection.

Did you know, mascara is the beauty product with the shortest shelf life! The longer a mascara is used, the higher the likelihood of bacteria forming, so be sure to toss your mascara away every 3 months when using regularly!

Save money, reduce waste and space in your makeup bag by opting for multipurpose products to elevate your daily routines.
