This end of year, we’ve teamed up with a few of our favourite health & beauty brands to offer you an amazing Christmas Giveaway: follow our Instagram for all the details! Christophe Robin is one of the brands we love. Sydney based nutritionist, Lou Edney gives insights into ways of naturally nourishing your hair, from the inside out.

"It’s not rocket science or a sexy pill but its evidence based that a healthy diet full of real food, lots of colourful plants, wholegrain, fats and protein will feed gorgeous locks. Focus on balance and don’t cut out food groups unless you must. Stress less .. acute and long term chronic stress can cause hair loss. Take a deep breath, and practise your ‘ommms’.  Avoid self-medicating. Nutrients in excess can cause hair loss, like vitamin A.

The scalp is part of our body’s largest organ, the skin, which is often forgotten due to our hair. As a major organ for detoxification, it's important to avoid build up of nasty chemicals - major culprits; dry shampoo, silicone based styling products and shampoos. These can clog the scalp, triggering irritation, flakiness and even hair loss. As the scalp is absorbent, it needs to be treated to natural ingredients.

We need to nourished physically from the inside out with the right balance of fats, carbohydrates and micronutrients to create a scalp that can nurture and maintain and a good head of hair.

Strong circulation is important to get oxygen flowing to your scalp and support the rapid cellular turnover in hair follicles which keep your hair in your head. You need:

◦ Vitamin C for healthy blood vessels
◦ Iron for blow and oxygenation
◦ Water for hydrating, #1 ingredient for healthy skin and scalp
◦ Omega 3 fatty acids for healthy skin
◦ Vitamin D to sustain rapid cellular turnover
◦ Antioxidants A, C and E for skin.

From a nutritional standpoint, hair loss can be caused by severe carbohydrate or protein deficiency, very low iron ,and/ or low vitamin d. Deficiencies in Iron, vitamin D, folate, vitamin B12 and selenium can also lead to premature greying."
