antioxidants in skincare
Our skin is our largest organ, we really need to take care of it! An easy way to do so is by using products with antioxidants. We often hear the word antioxidants in our skincare products, but what does it actually mean? Here is a brief article about them and why to include them in your daily skincare routine.
Let’s start from our inner body, our molecules. All living things contain molecules, which contain atoms each one with a proton (positive charge), neutron (neutral charge) and electron (negative charge). When an electron is lost then we have a Free Radical hanging around. Free Radicals can be caused by stress, non-balanced diet, lack of sleep, or environmental causes like pollution, alcohol, smoke, pesticides etc. This is not something you want as they immediately look for another electron to pair up with, usually taking it from a healthy stable molecule and causing oxidation. This oxidation is what accelerates the ageing process, but this is where antioxidants step in, they stabilise a free radical and stop its search for an electron.
Antioxidants can be found in food of course but it is great to absorb them topically as well. When we talk about antioxidants in our skincare, we are stabilising free radicals on our skin. This allows us to delay the ageing process, I mean aging is inevitable but let’s delay it by adding extra antioxidants!
Here are a few ingredients full of antioxidants known to be useful in anti-ageing:
Quandong fruit extract has the second highest level of antioxidants in all fruit!
Moringa seed extract contains 30 known antioxidants, useful in anti-ageing.
Papaya fermented extract is rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin E and antioxidants like beta-carotene.
Cranberry fruit extract high in vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin K, and an antioxidant proanthocyanidins (PACs).
Good news! These ingredients can be found in our skincare!
