“There is nothing more beautiful than the confidence that healthy glowing skin brings. As a Naturopath, I believe that healthy gorgeous skin comes from within. Our skin tells the story of our overall health; if our hormones are happy, if our liver is clearing toxins effectively or if needs a little more support, or perhaps that we need the support of a specific nutrient.

Our skin requires antioxidants, whole food vitamins, minerals and good fats to help obtain its luster and glow. All of these can be found within a whole food lifestyle. The benefit of enjoying fresh seasonal (and organic where possible) produce is the wide variety of nutrients we are able to enjoy and benefit from.

Some of the key skin loving foods are berries and purple vegetables, naturally rich in antioxidants that help to remove harsh free radicals from the body and slow the natural ageing progression. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for healthy collagen production. Collagen is what gives our skin firmness and elasticity and can be easily increased through our diet by enjoying seasonal fruits and vegetables, in particular capsicum, berries and citrus fruits.

Protein is another factor to consider in when we are looking at skin health.  Our body requires protein for many different reasons; and wound healing and cellular repair is come of them. Nuts and seeds are a delicious source of protein and a natural source of zinc which is vital for skin repair and rejuvenation.

Our digestive system plays a big role in our overall health and wellbeing. We are consistently  learning about how sophisticated our microbiome is and its (many many) roles in the body. When our digestive system is nourished with amazing wholefoods, fermented vegetables and gut healing foods our skin is brighter and clearer. We literally shine from the inside out.

Our skin not only tells us when we are not feeding it enough, it also can tell us when our elimination pathways need a little extra support. Fibre is often overlooked but is a key element for healthy skin, supporting the removal of excess hormones, toxins, and waste by products. Nuts, seeds, LSA, psyllium husks and slippery elm bark all can benefits here.  Vegetables also get a special mention, not only are they rich in fibre and support waste removal, they provide a wholefood dispensary of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients.  When we consuming bitter foods or liver loving foods such as dandelion greens and rocket we can increase our natural detoxification pathways, further supporting waste removal and improving overall digestive and nutrient absorption. “
