celebrating indigenous voices

celebrating indigenous voices

NAIDOC Week (7 July - 14 July 2024) is a time to amplify and respect Indigenous voices, champion justice and equality, and invite all Australians to engage in meaningful dialogue.

Ere Perez is proud to support NAIDOC Week through our longstanding relationship with Eve White, an Aboriginal Wiradjuri woman, mother, yoga and wellness entrepreneur. Allowing us to participate in events recognising and supporting Indigenous communities.

At the base of the sacred Mount Wollumbin in Bundjalung nation, Bundjalung elder Deidre Currie shared her passion for keeping her culture alive. A survivor of breast cancer and domestic violence, Deidre stands as a beacon of light and love, generously sharing her culture, beauty and strength.

Deidre emphasises the importance of reclaiming narratives within First Nations communities. "We now have a bigger voice. Our voices are falling on the right ears so others can join with us.”

Despite her busy life—caring for her family, volunteering, supporting trauma groups, and co-leading Kids Caring for Country for over a decade—Deidre found empowerment through her photoshoot at Mount Wollumbin. This experience allowed her to celebrate her individuality.

“It was the first time in 30 years that I’ve worn makeup. It’s actually the first time I’ve ever had my makeup done for me! It felt so good to be relaxing peacefully on country. It was wonderful. I felt like a person, not a mother or a community leader but me, Deidre.”

Photographer Kayla Finlayson drew inspiration from honouring the raw beauty and power in feminine First Nations solidarity, kinship, and culture on sacred country. Whilst makeup artist Brigitte Serhan kept Deidre’s look fresh and natural, emphasizing inner beauty. "My inspiration is that I love seeing people feel beautiful in their own skin.”

Ere Perez remains committed to supporting and celebrating Indigenous culture, voices, and empowerment, this NAIDOC Week and always.
